Not on the PC version, I'm afraid. Sorry to disappoint you. There's another thread where it's discussed in a bit more detail (link below). Apparently the Xbox 360 version allows online co-op, but the PC version does not. As far as I know, none of the Lego games on PC have online multiplayer.

I have Lego Star Wars and even though I have an Xbox game pass ultimate subscription, the game always responds to me going online with "You do not have sufficient Xbox LIVE privileges to play online multiplayer games."
Regardless, TT Games has confirmed several times over that it will have "local split-screen multiplayer co-op without online multiplayer functionality". To add to that, technically you can play the game online co-op using Remote Play Together on Steam. Or Parsec.
Sorry this is the first Lego Star Wars game I am considering. This game does have co-op with another player. As for choosing characters, in the beginning, you will only be able to play with the character (s) specified. However, after you complete a level, you can use your Lego stud money to buy new characters to be used on free play mode on
